Received 4 Likes on 4 Posts. 400M Bolt Pattern. OK first of all it's a 400 not a 400M. Second, there was 1 400 block which had the same bolt pattern as the 351C which is another member of the 335 series. The casting # was D3AE-B so your engine would have the 385 series (429/460) bolt pattern.

The 400 is a Cleveland, the 351M was a 400 block with a 351W crankshaft, Ford used the 351W crankshaft in the 400 block because they had a shortage of 400 cranks. Cleveland mains are much smaller than 351W,M, & 400. 351W and 400 bearings are different. 351M/400 and 351C use the same rod bearings. As for putting a W crank in a 351M/400, you can do it, I did it. And when you consider using one of the readily available stroker cranks for the 351 (or even the 302) Fords, there's no reason to use the harder-to-package 400M engine.Welcome to FTE. Yeupp, the 400 pistons will fit with the 4.000" crank...the only thing different between the 351M and the 400 is the crank and pistons. Now, presupposing the bore on the 351M is in good shape and consistent, and the 351M pistons are the same, I would mic the bore and old pistons and compare 'em to the 400 pistons.
